The provenance of Schaftplaas lies in its roots dating back to the 18th century when it was a haven for travellers to rest and replenish. The word “Schaft ” – derived from the early settlers’ language – literally meant “resting to eat” – and tells the charming story of its origin. 

The manor house built in 1832 survives, un-altered by generations of custodians to its heritage. Current owners, The Kruger family, take pride in preserving the original farm and have upgraded their amenities to perfectly reflect this. Since 1993, they have lovingly restored this charming oasis on the West Coast.

Boasting a wonderful natural heritage, Schaftplaas is located in an area consisting of a unique mosaic of vegetation types, Saldanha flats Endangered veld type area and a rich diversity of plants and animals. The Strandveld which borders on Sandveld falls within the Cape west coast section of South Africa’s unique Cape Floristic Kingdom, a Unesco biosphere reserve for biodiversity and the smallest of the six Floristics Kingdoms of the world. Schaftplaas is in close proximity to the west coast national park and the RAMSAR listed Langebaan lagoon. Schaftplaas is also right in the centre of the well known Spring flower blooms.
